Radgonske gorice

Gornja Radgona Municipality

RG Dom penine

The town of Gornja Radgona in Slovenia, as well as abroad, is best known for its wines. The history of viticulture is difficult to describe, as there are no written or material records. The vine was brought here by the ancient Romans, and in old chronicles we can find evidence that vines were cultivated in our region as early as the 12th century. In the 14th century, the citizens of Radgona were granted a special privilege by the duke to transport wine throughout Styria and the rest of Austria without customs duties and tolls.

The forerunners of viticulture in Gornja Radgona were the winemakers Kleinošek, whose Styrian sparkling wine was sold as early as 1852, and Bouvier, who carried the fame of Radgona’s wines into the world. Today, the company Radgonske gorice produces renowned “sun-drenched” wines, which mature in the cellars of the castle hill.

In the House of Sparkling Wine, guided tours of the cellar with tastings are available. Bottles of Zlata Radgonska Penina mature on special racks in the unique Cellar beneath the Rock, which is certainly worth a visit. In the Cellar beneath the Roman Wheel, where a special Roman wheel built into the wall, together with the sunlight filtering through it, symbolizes the development of winemaking and sparkling wine production in Radgonske gorice, some particularly precious vintages of archival sparkling wines are stored. Every visitor will undoubtedly be enchanted by the Cellar beneath the Waterfall, where a waterfall gently flows from the rock of the castle hill, creating a magical atmosphere that makes the tasting of wines and sparkling wines a truly special experience.
