Slivnica Ponds

West of the Hoče–Slivnica road, on the edge of the vast Hoče Forest, lie the Slivnica Ponds, which are of artificial origin. Their aquatic and floodplain vegetation is particularly interesting. Two rare plant species thrive here: the European Chickweed (Pseudostellaria europaea) and the Water Chestnut (Trapa natans). The ponds and their surroundings are a habitat for many birds, but especially for various amphibians, among which the Garlic Toad (Pelobates fuscus) should be mentioned, as it is very rare and endangered in Slovenia. The entire Hoče Forest in the background of the ponds is of great natural importance, as evidenced by the extremely rare Black Stork, which occasionally nests there. The Slivnica Ponds are subject to a special protection regime. Because of their unique characteristics, they are important for habitats, scientific research, educational activities, and fish farming.

Rainwater from Pohorje flows into the ponds, which makes the water somewhat cooler. Carp and pike dominate the pond’s fish population. Looking across the pond, one can also see other animals such as swans, ducks, and a wide variety of birds. The surroundings of the ponds are embraced by a beautiful forest, sheltered from the wind, with a pleasant climate that makes the area ideal for fishing, leisurely walks, and a natural experience where you can rest, meditate, relax, and recharge with energy.
