Maribor Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of St . Janez Krstnik is located in the heart of Maribor on Slomšek Square and is considered the city’s principal church as well as the seat of the Archdiocese of Maribor. With a rich history dating back to the late 12th century, it is one of the most important sacred buildings in north-eastern Slovenia.
Originally built in the Romanesque style, the church has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries. In the 15th century, Gothic features were added—still visible today in the chancel, windows and bell tower. During the Baroque period, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, the interior was richly decorated with altars, frescoes and other artworks, reflecting a blend of artistic styles from different eras.
The bell tower, built in 1623, is one of the church’s most recognisable exterior features. It houses three bells. The interior is spacious and bright, with sumptuous artistic decoration that immediately captures visitors’ attention.
Today, the cathedral is not only a place of worship but also an important cultural venue. It regularly hosts liturgical celebrations, concerts and other events. Thanks to its historical and artistic value, it is also a popular landmark for visitors, drawn by its architectural beauty and spiritual heritage.
