Where art connects!

UGM | Maribor Art Gallery is the second-largest museum of modern and contemporary art in Slovenia and boasts a collection of more than 10,000 artworks by Slovenian artists—from the late 19th century to the present day.

Alongside paintings, sculpture and works on paper, the gallery also presents photography, video art, multimedia installations and interactive projects. In addition to the key names of Slovenian visual art of the past century, you can also discover influential international artists, promising young creators and current trends in contemporary art.

Founded in 1954, UGM became Maribor’s first professional institution dedicated to museum and gallery work in the field of modern art. Its main exhibition venues are housed in a former bourgeois palace from the first half of the 19th century and in the former church of the “Heavenly Convent” from the second half of the 18th century. One of the most impressive interior features is the painted 19th-century ceiling in the Grand Hall, depicting historical scenes, with the central motif being a precise copy of a Raphael fresco from the Vatican. Located at the corner of Strossmayerjeva and Orožnova streets, the Maribor Art Gallery offers around 800 m² of exhibition space. In 2026, UGM will expand into the Rotovž – the city’s cultural town hall, where Maribor will gain its first purpose-built visual arts exhibition venue.

With its collection and an annual programme of around 15 special exhibitions—from retrospectives of Slovenian artists to international contemporary art festivals, as well as architecture and design exhibitions—UGM plays an important role in shaping both the local and international art scene. Its well-designed educational programme connects different generations, cultural communities and educational institutions.
