In the centre of Maribor, one of the largest and oldest classical wine cellars in Europe is located, which boasts an area of 15,000 m2 and 2.1 km long underground tunnels. The oldest part of the basement was built a day ago in 1847. Wooden barrels, concrete tanks, bottles with wine patino... have a total capacity of 3 million liters! The most valuable speciality of the cellar is the wine archive, and the exploration of the "Maribor underworld" is followed by an excellent wine tasting. Today, the tradition continues at the diverse subpohorje locations of the "Prince's Peak" by the Faculty of Agriculture and Biosystem Sciences of the University of Maribor, where the Centre for Research in Viticulture and Winemaking on The Town grows, nouals and markets quality and top quality wines and takes care of a gene bank containing more than 400 varieties of different vines.
On the outskirts of Maribor, on the Sunny Paradise estate in Vodole, visitors to the Maribor Wine Road are greeted by the first Fontana vin in Styria. The wine fountain combines eight different wine barrels from local winemakers and two non-alcoholic home-made drinks, as well as a wine list of top-quality bottled wines. Good food is also served: cooked smoked shanps and dried, vegetarian and vegan plates (from weekends or on pre-order). Food is delivered even by air to the sunny terrace of the Wine Fountain! Next to the Wine Fountain, the Sunny Paradise estate also features a permaculture garden, herb plantations, an apiary and an adrenaline zipline experience called Bee flight.
